Planting and Care Instructions
-
Unboxing:
Upon receiving your trees, make sure to take your trees out right away. You can store them outside, out of direct sunlight until you decide to plant them. Once they are planted, they can be in direct sun. Due to the root balls being in a bag, this will allow the soil to stay moist. So watering your trees won’t need to be done as frequently, especially in the colder months.
Planting:
Ideally it is best to plant in fall or spring, but it is possible to plant in the winter time as the Colorado Blue Spruce can tolerate a wide vary of temperatures. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen. These trees are hearty but still don’t like the freezing temperatures when there roots are still establishing. If planting in the winter time, to protect these young trees, use sticks or stakes to prop the tree up. To prevent from freezing, wrap in a vinyl guard or tree wrap. If you decide not to plant in ground until spring, you can plant your trees in any deep pot or even a 5 gallon bucket will be fine!
When planting, dig hole that is as deep as the root system and about 3 inches wider that the roots width.
Water:
When newly planted, water every couple days to keep soil moist but not soggy. After a month, water weekly unless in rains or snows in the duration of that week.
Sun:
Once planted, allow tree to get at least 4-6 hours of sun per day.
Fertilize:
Fertilize trees monthly with a fertilizer rich in phosphorus to promote better root development.
Common Questions
When will my trees go dormant?
Your seedlings will go dormant in the winter season. During dormancy you will still need to water your trees. Colorado Blue Spruce are very expressive when it comes to dormancy, they will often change a dusty brown or green color instead of there typical vibrant blue or deep green that they usually are. Keep in mind when spring hits they will start to return to their normal coloring!
How tall do Colorado Blue Spruce get?
These trees can get up 100 feet tall, but this can take up to 30 to 50 years for your tree to fully mature. They are typically slower growing, with the growth of 6-12 inches per year.
Can I grow my tree indoors?
Yes, you can plant your tree in a deep pot and store indoors. Just make sure your tree is receiving plenty of water, sunlight, and humidity!

When planting, dig hol
When planting, dig hole that is slightly deeper than the trees root system, allowing the roots to go straight down in the hole so they can stretch out.
Water:
When newly planted, water every couple days to keep soil moist but not soggy. After a month, water weekly unless in rains or snows in the duration of that week. These trees are prone to needle cast which is a fungal issue. It is caused from to moist of an environment. The needles will start to rapidly die verses the typical needles drying out. To help prevent this, try to avoid watering overhead and not getting the needles wet. Keep in a more ventilated area. Neem oil can be applied to the needles to help combat the issue!
Sun:
Once planted, allow tree to get at least 4-6 hours of sun per day.
Prune:
Prune in dormancy season in the spring or fall.
Fertilize:
Fertilize trees monthly with a fertilizer rich in phosphorus to promote better root development.
Common Questions
When will my trees go dormant?
Your seedlings will go dormant in the winter season. During dormancy you will still need to water your trees. Ponderosa Pines are very expressive when it comes to dormancy, they will often change a dark purple color. Keep in mind when spring hits they will start to return to their normal coloring!
How tall do Ponderosa Pines get?
These trees can get up 230 feet tall, but can take decades for your tree to fully mature.
Can I grow my tree indoors?
Yes, you can plant your tree in a deep pot and store indoors. Just make sure your tree is receiving plenty of water, sunlight, and humidity!
Tree Health
A very common concern I get is, “Why are my Ponderosa pines needles turning yellow or brown?” To put your mind at ease, your tree is still very healthy! This is typically just desiccation or drying out of the needles. This is normal, and you will notice that the needles will fall and be replaced by new ones. If your tree has lost most of its needles, just keep watering like normal as it is preparing itself for more growth!
